Started and sponsored a scholarship program in a local school that serves to educate children in rural areas. Students who excel in Math, Science and Tamil language are awarded with scholarships and provided small funds towards their higher education.
: Conducted a four-day conference to Doctors, Nurses, Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANM), Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHA) and allied health professionals on Obstetric emergencies. Provided Clinical Simulation training on the importance of teamwork in providing care in emergency situations. Providers from public and private institutions were trained.
Worked with the Madras MGR Medical University and Salem Medical College Clinical Simulations Department to conduct a Train the Trainer conference on clinical simulations in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Senior professors from about 30 Medical Colleges attended this program. Also, the Foundation was a driving force in getting the Clinical Simulation Training to be included in the Curriculum of Medical Education at MGR Medical University .
Joined with local NGOs and nonprofit organization & supported a program that was geared to reduce maternal mortality in general hospital and several PHCs in Erode District in India. The Foundation provided a small grant and also helped to conduct hands on training to the staff to use compute devices that needs to collect important data.
Developed educational videos for mothers emphasizing the need for institutional deliveries, the dangers of home birth and also about the warning signs of pregnancies. Created posters to be displayed at Government hospitals and the primary health centers in the district of Erode, Tamil Nadu.
In a joint effort to help care for children at their homes, we worked with a nonprofit organization called Jeevika in Bihar and a company dedicated to women’s and newborn’s health. The Foundation provided kits with biometric devices like BP monitors, digital thermometers, pulse oximeters and weighing scales to self help women called Jeevika Didis. Using a Newborn health application, these women went to patient’s home to monitor these children. Once identified to be sick, these children were transported to local PHCs or tertiary care with the help of UNICEF. This program is still ongoing and has resulted in a huge impact preventing newborn deaths at home.
Bleeding after delivery is a major complication that could cause the life of the mother. This complication results in about 25% of all maternal deaths. Working with the district magistrate of the district of Gaya, the Foundation supplied an important device to various Primary Health Centers in the District of Gaya, Bihar. Since this is a new device, UNICEF supported the program by helping to conduct hands-on training for the doctors and nurses to learn the technique to use these devices. A total of 30 sets of these devices were provided to all the primary and tertiary care hospitals in the district of Gaya. The Foundation has received feed backs from the doctors that the device is very effective in preventing the deaths of mothers.
The Foundation raised funds to build a community health center in a small village that serves the nearby tribal community living in Kolli Hills, a forest area. This project was funded and initiated as a public and private partnership scheme by the Government of Tamil Nadu. The construction for the center is still ongoing.
The Foundation is working with the Rotary Club of Coimbatore and some companies with CSR funds to build a mother and baby referral unit in Thalavdi, a hilly forest area with multiple tribal communities resides. At present, pregnant women with complications need to be transported to tertiary care hospital located about 70-100 kilometers where time would be of essence to save these mothers. We have approached the local district administrator to help with this program
